Event description

Description

We invite you to be part of this year “ Black history month” celebration to be held on Saturday, February 23rd, on Prospect street, Bellingham WA. It will be a local groundbreaking and inspiring 500+ person event.

Deeply meaningful for the African American community, the Black History Month is also imperative for the greater understanding of national and world history. By reliving and remembering history, we create awareness of the struggles and challenges that African Americans overcame.

During this event, we will promote positive examples of poignant historical events , exemplary leaders, and steps forwards societal changes. It will be a time of reflection, open dialogue, interdisciplinary education, and shared advocacy initiatives. The youths will therefore be boosted and have the healthy mind they need to fight for themselves and contribute to their healthy environment. As Rigina Edmondson puts is: “This will be the time for us to remember the important achievements and contributions of African Americans within our community. We believe it’s important to celebrate and honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Africa Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history. This holds true today when all too often only the most negative aspects of African American communities get highlighted. We are overwhelmed with the pictures of athletes and reality shows as examples of the success of Black people. We are subjected daily to unfair stereotypes and assumptions from a culture that is still learning to accept us.

We also noticed that there were a lot of negative things being said about black women online and through other media outlets. It bothered us to hear/read it said that black women were unmarriageable and that they were the least attractive of all the women on the planet.

Our mission is to create a platform where we can stand together against stereotyping, colorism, misogyny, and racism that is often our lived experience. By doing so, we will cultivate the heart and mind locally and internationally to celebrate the beauty, power, and resilience of black community and to congratulate them on their accomplishment.

See you all there!
