Event description

Description

Join Black Girls Teach as we gather up our network of Black woman educators for a weekend of amplifying lost voices in urban education, sharing our expertise in areas of literacy, advocacy, leadership and wellness, highlight experts we follow and provide you with the professional development we all have been lacking.

In addition to speakers and workshop sessions, ticket prices include breakfast/refreshments throughout the event, session materials, and BGT swag. Participants can also attend brunch with the members and founder of Black Girls Teach on Day 2 in order to keep the connection and collaboration going.

Saturday, September 21st (Day 1) will offer you four amazing professional learning sessions with some of the DMV area's top educational gurus:

Session 1: Holding the Mirror: Examining Our Biases in School with Ashley Peel

In this session, participants will identify personal biases and understand how they influence our interactions with students, parents, and peers and learn to utilize the art of storytelling to dismantle biases and get to know the people you work with. Participants will walk away with the tools to attack personal and professional biases as a Black educator.

Session 2: Reflections for Black women that want to Show up and Show out with Shantel Sappleton

In this session, participants will examine personal reflection practices-or the lack thereof- and work to master some go to techniques that ensure we show up as our authentic, impactful, and powerful selves, always. Participants will walk away with reflective practices that can immediately be implemented into your daily routines and positively impact how you show up for students, parents, colleagues, friends and online.

Session 3: Educate, Enlighten and Empower→ Teaching to end Injustice with Tiffany Jackson

In this session, participants will examine the importance and impact of Decolonizing the Curriculum, learn tools to mastering this ideology, and focus on the intentionality of having a literacy-focused mindset. Walk away from this session with curricula materials, critical thinking tools and intellectual fodder necessary to transform classrooms across the DMV.

Session 4: Act like a BOSS, Think like a Brand with Deidra Fogarty

In this session, participants will learn about the power of Black Educators branding themselves as Educators with specialized skills in their area of expertise, both offline and online. Participants will walk away with concrete action steps to begin the process of building their brand.

Sunday, September 22nd (Day 2) will offer you a chance to fellowship with like-minded Black women educators as we reflect on the lessons taught from Saturday, talk through our enlightenment, plan to transform education as we know it and brunch at one of DC's restaurant venues.

Walk away from this retreat feeling heard, valued- knowing how to create a learning environment and experiences that empower children and educators of color- trusting that you are powerful enough to transform any space you enter! This is the professional learning that you have been waiting for. For us, by us.
