Online event
We will have a realistic conversation about Black shopping habits and spending trends from the past and present, backed by history and data.
About this event
Join us this month for Black Consumerism: A Look at Black Spending, Past and Present an online conversation hosted by Melaneyes Media.
In this online learning experience we will view clips from the short film "Secret of Selling to the Negro" produced in 1954. We will analyze some of the generalizations, and assumptions made about African Americans from that time frame, to see if there are parallels today.
We will also take the time to review “It’s in the Bag: Black Consumers’ Path to Purchase,” a study from the Nielsen Company in 2019 to help marketers understand the spending habits of Black Americans.
Did You Know?
"More than half (52%) of African Americans find in-store shopping relaxing, compared with 26% of the total population” and “55% of Black consumers say they enjoy wandering the store looking for new, interesting products." - according to this report
In this online discussion we be taking a look at few different topics including:
- Do Black Americans spend more than other groups, if so in what categories
- What influences Black spending
- What role does history play in our purchase decisions
- How does shopping affect our community
- What is the mentality connected to hyper-materialism
Let's be clear, there are many issues that affect the Black community as a whole and we are not one big homogeneous group with one mind set and all the same habits; however there are patterns and habits that the majority share that are worth analyzing and paying attention to.
This presentation is not hyper-critical, we are not looking to demonize spending money and to shame people for their purchasing choices. The goal is to take a look at the facts and the history so that we can learn from our past and in order to better our position in the future as a people.
