Event Details

Please join us at the Center for Prophetic Imagination for a workshop led by the radical and talented Vanessa Taylor about Black American Muslims & Liberation Theology. Suggested donation of $20 per person, coffee and tea will be available.

Black American Muslims & Liberation Theology

Within Black American communities, there is a tradition of prophetic protest conceived through Black religion, a holy protest against anti-black racism. At times, the liberation theology of Black Americans almost seems to transcend theism and transfers across religions with ease.

In this workshop, we will examine Black theodicy as a tradition rooted in accounting for the experiences of Black Americans as a whole, from slavery and beyond. We will re-establish our understanding of Islamophobia to include its anti-black roots and we will examine the work of Black American Muslims whose understanding and development of Islam is firmly rooted within Black religion.

Vanessa Taylor (they/them, she/her) is a co-founder of the Black Liberation Project, a grassroots Black youth collective that hosts a multitude of events, including twice a month (Black) youth meetings, healing spaces, and various actions. They have also worked with American Friends Service Committee as a youth leader for Youth Undoing Institutional Racism (YUIR), along with facilitating Freedom School throughout the year. They have facilitated a wide variety of workshops (including workshops on antiblackness, misogynoir, youth empowerment, and intersectionality within movements) and have participated in a number of panels to speak on their experiences within the current movement for Black lives. They are a freelance writer whose work focuses on addressing the realities of Black womanhood and Muslim identity.
