BKO

BKO Quintet from Mali combines two distinct musical traditions of Mali into one seamless performance with an urban edge. As James Nadal points out in All About Jazz, “The BKO Quintet blended mixed musical identities resulting in a progressive production, all the while firmly rooted in traditions that date back thousands of years, proving that there is no such thing as limits, boundaries or frontiers when it comes to music.”

BKO came together instigated by drummer Aymeric Krol and djembe player Ibrahima Sarr (Oumou Sangare). Aymeric credits Ibrahima with the idea to combine the sounds of the donsongoni (hunter’s harp) with the djelingoni (the harp of the griots). Breaking with centuries of tradition, BKO takes these two traditions and forges a new sound that speaks to modern day Mali. As Mali already has highly developed musical traditions, it is not surprising that the younger generation, exposed to global sounds via the internet and radio, would come up with fresh musical ideas. The two lead vocalists are Fassara Sacko who represents the more gritty urban sound of the modern griot, and NFaly Diakite, whose voice is more rural and lyrical. N’Faly Diakite also plays the donsongoni, and Mamoutou Diabate plays the djelingoni to round out this cast of stellar musicians.

They played Mountain Stage in September 2018, with exposure to over 200 radio stations nationwide.

Their first release, Bamako Today, was recorded under the challenging circumstances of military incursions in the north of Mali. The album finally came to light via the well-known Buda Musique label, and captured the public’s imagination with its sense of urgency.

As Banning Eyre notes in his album review in Afropop Worldwide, “The ensemble creates an engaging blend of rural and urban sensibilities. Prominent in the mix is the sound and feel of hunters’ music, with the heavy thrumming tones of the donsongoni(hunters’ harp) played by Nfali Diakite, who adds rap-like incantations that evoke ancient days when hunters were the storytellers and reporters of their village societies. At the same time, we have the sharp, nimble sound of the djelingoni and portentous blasts of Mande griot oratory from Fassara Sacko.”

Though anchored in centuries-old traditions, BKO's music will transport you to the heart of today's urban Mali as well as to the ritual and mysterious depths of the animist hunters.
