Event description

Description

Crew Leaders: Thomas Calvery

Project Overview: We will be meeting at Sams Walker before driving to the camp location north of Beacon Rock State Park on the Birkenfeld Section of the PCT. We will be organizing a carpool at Sams Walker as there is limited parking at the camp and the road is in poor condition. Volunteers with a high clearance 4WD or AWD vehicle are encouraged to volunteer. If you plan on driving please ensure you have a full tank of gas and room for your fellow volunteers.

Our work will initially consist of brushing 400 yards of trail followed by an extensive reconstruction of the tread. Tools will be cached at the work location to make the hike easier.

There are no facilities at the camp location. We will be digging a privy, providing a wash station for dishes, and a hand washing station. There is no water at camp, we will have a sufficient amount supplied for volunteers. A camp tender will be providing meals as follows:

  • Friday dinner: Classic spaghetti with Italian meatballs and tomato sauce. Caesar salad and garlic bread.
  • Saturday breakfast: Pancakes with scrambled eggs and sausage links.
  • Saturday lunch: Make your own sandwich deli meat and cheese bar with fruit and chips
  • Saturday dinner: Maple Balsamic glazed pork chop with green beans and baked potato bar
  • Sunday breakfast: Sausage and egg breakfast burrito bar
  • Sunday lunch: Make your own sandwich deli meat and cheese bar with fruit and chips
  • Optional breakfast: Yogurt and granola

What You Need: During working hours long sleeve shirts, long pants, sturdy boots that protect your ankles are required. Bring a pack with sufficient water, lunch for Friday, rain gear, extra layers, warm hat, and any additional personal items you require. If you do not have your own; hard hats, gloves, and safety glasses will be provided.

For camping bring you personal shelter and sleep system, a folding chair, mess kit with coffee cup, beverage cup, plate, knife, fork, etc. Also bring clothing and whatever personal items you need for being comfortable around camp.

In addition, I am requesting that if anyone has an excellent sun/rain shelter that could be used for a group dining area to please bring it with you. Also, if anyone has a portable folding table that is suitable for camping please bring it too.

FAQs

What do I need for overnight trips?

You need to have some backcountry camping experience to make your trip enjoyable and safe. You need to provide your own tent, sleeping bag, and mess kit for meals, as well as any other equipment to help make yourself comfortable in camp. Some of our crews are supported by a camp tender and meals will be provided, while others are self-supported and you will need to bring all your own food and cooking gear. This will be noted in the project signup. Please see Volunteer Trail Crew Guidebook – Overnight and Extended Projects for more information.
