PLEASE NOTE: The dates and times shown to the right reflect only the start and end days and times! See below for all actual class dates and times.

The South Platte River, a dominant feature of our state, carves a giant arc north and east as it leaves Colorado and crosses Nebraska to join the Missouri River. All along its length wildlife has come for centuries to take advantage of its diverse habitats and resources.

Join us for an all-day field trip (no indoor session) to Jumbo Reservoir, Red Lion SWA, and the town of Ovid. We'll meet in Hudson and those who wish can carpool from there. Only two hours from Hudson, Logan and Sedgwick Counties, in extreme NE Colorado, get less attention than many of their neighbors, but have far more high-quality birding spots than most of them. So why not go see where all the birds are flocking?

Our species focus will include all the ducks, grebes (including Red-necked), Common Loon (with possibilities of the other three), five species of geese possible (including hordes of magnificent Snow Geese), American Pipit, Snow Bunting, Lapland Longspur, Common Redpoll, Harris's, and White-throated and White-crowned Sparrows. A Colorado Fishing/Small Game Hunting License, available online or at local sporting goods stores, is needed for access (2019 fees - one day adult, $12; 16-64 annual, $33; and 65 and up, only $8).

Come home that day or opt to stay overnight in Sterling and return the next day, birding along the way. Tamarack Ranch SWA is nearby and Prewitt Reservoir, between Sterling and Brush, is one of the state's premier sites for shorebirds and migrant passerines.

Check out eBird's annual bar chart for Jumbo Reservoir to see what's possible:

Field Class only: Saturday, November 2, 2019, 6:00 am - 5:00 pm. Meet in Hudson, CO (Hwy 52 & I76) at 6:00 am.

Tuition: $50.00. Limited to 12 participants. Registration opens on September 21, 2019 at 8:00 am.

Special Note: There is no indoor session accompanying this class.

Instructor Sue Riffe began her birding career visiting St. Marks NWR in Florida with some friends. After seeing an American Kestrel in a scope, she was hooked! Having lived in Ohio and Florida, she now calls Colorado home. Sue has actively birded in all 64 counties in the Rocky Mountain state and sees over 300 species annually. She’s the owner and tour leader of She Flew Birding Tours, and offers trips in Colorado, Florida, Arizona, Maine, migration hotspots, and international destinations. She has been a professional music educator for over 20 years and enjoys sharing her love of birds and bird songs with all ages.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

Our classes are geared toward adult learners. The minimum suggested age for attendance is 18.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

The specific meeting place will be provided to registrants about two weeks before the class starts in a "Welcome" email from the Instructor. Come directly to the location provided and Sue will meet you there at 6:00 am.

If you wish to carpool on the field trip, or stay overnight, you can make your own arrangements. We will provide a list of participants who allow us to share their names and emails for this purpose. While we suggest that all occupants share the fair cost of gas/operating costs, BCNA does not organize or participate in any carpool arrangements. If you carpool, please discuss and agree on your travel plans in advance.

What can I bring to the event?

You will want paper and pen/pencil. The instructor will let you know if there is anything specific that you should bring to the field session. Otherwise be prepared for time outdoors, including brief times away from the car. Be sure to bring a daypack with water and food for snacks and lunch. Wear hiking clothes and footwear adequate for conditions. Bring sun protection (sun lotion, sun glasses, hat, long sleeves), bug dope, and any field guides, binoculars, spotting scopes, trekking poles, or other personal items and extra clothing you might want.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Please email We do not check this account every day, but will try to get back to you within four business days.

What's the refund policy?

We open registration for each class just six weeks before it begins so that you will have a good idea of your availability. Our apologies, but refunds are not available. Most of the proceeds from classes go to our instructors. The remainder helps support our education program, research grants, publications, seminars, and conservation efforts. If you must cancel, we hope you'll consider your payment as a donation to the Boulder County Nature Association. Of course, if we must cancel a class, your payment will be fully refunded.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

Yes. Just log on to your account, go to "Tickets," select your order, and then choose "Edit." Change the name and email address to the new attendee's information. Be sure to check the box and we will send them a confirmation email with all the ticket/registration information they'll need. Once you're done, select "Save" to save your changes.

Demand for our classes is high and participation is limited. Classes usually fill up early, and we maintain a waiting list. If you cannot attend or find a substitute, please let us know as soon as possible so that we may offer your spot to someone else.

Can I update my registration information?

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No, your name will be on our registration list. You may print your Confirmation Email if you want a record.
