Description

Start the new year off right with a birding trip to the Mattamuskeet and Pocosin National Wildlife Refuges!

Join the Sylvan Heights staff and Education Specialist Mike Campbell of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission for an exciting trip to see large numbers of migratory birds. The Mattamuskeet and Pocosin refuges provide excellent viewing opportunities for thousands of waterfowl, song birds, and shore birds that overwinter in North Carolina. Learn winter bird identification in the field and the importance of these unique habitats to wildlife. Bring your binoculars as we search for migratory species as well as year-round residents including Great blue heron, egrets, bald eagles, and black bears. Transportation from Sylvan Heights and lunch will be provided.

We will depart from Sylvan Heights at 7:00 AM for Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge. At Mattamuskeet, we will meet our guide, Mike Campbell, and enjoy wildlife viewing, tour the visitor’s center, and have lunch. After lunch, depart we’ll depart for Pocosin National Wildlife Refuge for more wildlife viewing before returning to Sylvan Heights at approx. 6:00 PM.
