Atlanta is leading the way with biophilic design, the Living Building Challenge and the Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design. Join us for an enjoyable and informative conversation about how new insights into health and wellness are changing the way we will be designing our buildings and our cities in the years ahead. This session is the official kick-off for the third annual Biophilic Leadership Summit, taking place in Serenbe over the next two days, providing an opportunity for people in Atlanta with an interest in biophilia, sustainable development and health and wellness to get a significant taste of these subjects without having to register to attend the Summit at Serenbe. Sonja Bochart is a leading expert on biophilic design, consulting on the Kendeda Building project, and Joshua Gassman is the design lead on the project.

Speakers:

Sonja Bochart, Principal of Shepley Bulfinch

Sonja's background in creating meaningful and healthy spaces can be found in her over 20 year of experience as a designer; shaping spaces for connection, healing and overall well-being. She is a Principal with Shepley Bulfinch and also provides consulting services through Lens Strategy, a consulting studio within Shepley Bulfinch.

An avid speaker, instructor, leader and writer, Sonja promotes thoughtfulness and leading-edge innovations of holistic design with a focus on human health and wellness. Her interior design portfolio includes award-winning educational, community, international, cultural, residential and corporate spaces. Sonja’s designs and workshops integrate leading edge principles of biophilia (passion for life), mindfulness, evidence based design, storytelling and sustainability to create holistic places of wellness, inspiration and transformation.

Her work spans from advisory, body-centered and educational work-sessions, initial concept development, planning, full interior-design services, artwork and furniture integration, product design and consulting- and is informed by the latest research relative to design and human emotional, physiological and physical health.

Joshua Gassman, Senior Associate at Lord Aeck Sargent

Joshua is a Sustainable Design Director with nearly 20 years of experience in sustainable design and project management.He currently leads the Design Team for The Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design at Georgia Tech, aiming to be the most sustainable building ever built in the Southeastern US. He has received his Master of Architecture (with honors) from Arizona State University and Bachelor of Arts in Architecture (Minor in Music) from Washington University in St. Louis and serves the AIA Atlanta Committee on the Environment; he is also a member of the Georgia Solar Energy Society, SouthFace, International Institute for Sustainable Labs (I2SL), and International Living Futures Institute.
