Description

Part of our Core Knowledge Series

Required* You must have attended an Intro to Biolab Workshop or have previous experience*

This hands-on workshop will cover the basics of cutting and looking at DNA. Since DNA is quite small (~2nm in diameter) we use clever tools to visualize and analyze it. One of the most commonly used tools are restriction enzymes. These nanosized scissors let us cut DNA at very specific sequences. Next, we use electricity to squeeze DNA through a gel, seperating the shorter strands from the longer ones. This DNA is stained with special dyes that light up under fluorescent light and cause the DNA to glow exactly like in the photo above.

Participants will learn how to perform these 'restriction digests' and analyze the DNA with gel electrophoresis. We will cover the process of making and running an agarose gel. At the end, each participant will learn how to visualize these gels with UV light and evaluate the length of the DNA fragments.

Our Core Knowledge Series offers a guided introduction to common techniques that allow us to work with DNA. These workshops are the foundation necessary to learn molecular cloning, synethic biology, modern genetics, and forensic biology. They include DNA Isolation + PCR; Restriction Digest + Gel Electrophoresis; & Bacterial Transformation

Participants are required to read and sign the Inworks Terms of Use and General Safety Rules.
