Event description

Description

Part of our Core Knowledge Series

Required* You must have attended an Intro to Biolab Workshop or have previous experience*

Many bacteria are able to grab DNA from their environment or from neighboring organisms and 'transform' themselves, adding new skills and abilities to their repetoire. This horizontal gene transfer allows them to pick up useful genes to survive hardship or adapt to changing environments.

In the workshop we will learn how to transform a laboratory strain of E. coli with DNA we assembled in the lab. We will walk through basic microbiology techniques necessary to carry out the procedure and discuss the genes present in the new DNA including a colorful protein and a protein that provides resistance to an antibiotic.

The freshly transformed bacteria will be placed into an incubator to grow and will take about a day to become visible. Photos of the results willl be emailed to participants. Successful transformants typically change color within 2-3 days. Participants are encouraged to return to view and discuss their results.

Our Core Knowledge Series offers a guided introduction to common techniques that allow us to work with DNA. These workshops are the foundation necessary to learn molecular cloning, synethic biology, modern genetics, and forensic biology. They include DNA Isolation + PCR; Restriction Digest + Gel Electrophoresis; & Bacterial Transformation

Participants are required to read and sign the Inworks Terms of Use and General Safety Rules.
