Many practitioners sit through retreats having no concept of how "deep" they could be going.

We end up believing ourselves to be "heroic" meditators because we sat through pain and discomfort. And that's powerful and necessary sometimes. Absolutely. But pain and discomfort are almost always also a symptom of deeper emotional work that needs to be done.

Unless we address this, we spend our time again and again fighting and being with the pain, rather than taking the journey it's asking us to go on.

Conscious, skilled, emotional processing in meditation is one of the most valuable, most imperative contributions, the modern world has brought to meditation.

Imagine yourself sitting. The breath is smooth. The air is shimmering. Your body opens and suddenly an image appears. A memory. And with that memory comes tears... rage... confusion... the body.

The Bio Emotive Framework was developed by Dr. Tataryn after over a decade of clinical work. It teaches people to activate the body’s natural healing process through a 6-step emotional processing practice.

Emotional Processing is the ability to experience, differentiate, and express the emotions you have going on inside you. Processing your emotions stops you from being haunted by them and reduces the likelihood of you living in a state of “Chronic Emotional Activation” which means your body is in a constant stress-response. You are irritable, unfocused, scattered, tired, and fidgety. When you are not living in Chronic Emotional Activation, you can access your body’s rejuvenation response, which means you can access states of creativity, relaxation, and motivation.

This retreat is a special chance to learn how to sense, understand, and work with our emotions within the powerful container of a monastic meditation retreat. You will learn the tools of Bio-Emotive so that you can release your emotions and how that impacts our meditation practice. During the weekend, you will have the opportunity to work directly with Dr. Doug Tataryn and Ali Tataryn. You will learn:

  • The Anatomy of the emotional system and how it fits into meditation
  • How emotions cause mind-chatter and how to get rid of the mind-chatter
  • The difference between attention and awareness, and creating a powerful mind for inner exploration
  • How resting in pure awareness/rigpa plays a role in emotional processing
  • A basic overview of the different types of meditation and how they fit into the 4 pillars of spiritual development (wake up, clean up, grow up, look around) Dr. Doug's version of Wilber's which takes into account a better clarification of subtle realm phenomena.
  • How to use emotional processing to go deeper into meditation
  • How to use emotional processing to clear intense body-pain

The Monastic Academy residents and a few select guests will continue beyond the weekend to do a deep integration of the Bio-Emotive within relationships and ourselves. This includes:

  • Bio-Emotive and how it fits with relationships (through the practice of Circling)
  • How to bring a developmental understanding into interpersonal practice.
  • What a Meta-Circle is (Group-Mind / We-Space is a practice of LITERALLY waking up to the emergent of a group-intelligence, and how to overcome blocks. This is high complexity practice.)
  • When a circle becomes a "we-space" and when it's just a circle
  • How to use Bio-Emotive / Coherance awareness to overcome disconnection in we-space

Teachers / Facilitators

Dr. Tataryn received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 1991 from the University of Arizona, minoring in statistics and research methodology. He is presently in full-time private practice (clinical, research, sports psychology and performance enhancement, life-coaching) and is an adjunct professor with the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba.

He was previously a research professor with the University of Manitoba, affiliated with Manitoba Centre for Health Policy and then the Faculty of Nursing, a clinical psychologist with the Manitoba Cancer Treatment and Research Centre, and held a post-doctoral fellowship from the National Cancer Institute of Canada.

Dr. Tataryn’s main research interest and clinical focus was in understanding the central role of emotional processes in psychological well-being and the development of chronic diseases. He is published in psychology, health services research, and research methodology.

Alexandra Tataryn is Doug's daughter and a skilled, group facilitator. She founded an online community which ties together emotional processing, circling, and subtle-space awareness practices. Ali is trained in Counselling, Expressive Arts Facilitation and Bio-Emotive Focusing. She is a 10+year practitioner of Buddha Dharma and meditation. She is keenly attuned to creating conditions for we-spaces to emerge. Integral Theory informs her work. She also leads workshops in movement and art for emotional healing.


Please note that this is a workshop primarily aimed towards meditators and open to anyone in good mental and emotional health. This is not a therapy session or a replacement for mental health treatment. For those currently struggling with depression, suicidal thoughts, or other challenges, this may not be the best program for you right now. Please consult with your doctor and/or therapist if you are uncertain. This program is not a replacement for medical treatment or not taking prescription drugs.

MAPLE is located at the end of a mile long private driveway that winds high up a hill. Our 123 acres are abundant with wildlife and boasts commanding views out over the Green Mountains with wonderful trails through the woods. Recharge and re-examine your life in this peaceful setting where the trees, the rains, the winds, the sun, the snows, the frogs, and the stars still speak.


Our buildings are newly built with an elegant simplicity. With wood and plenty of light and air throughout they have a comfortable and human feel. The main room is large and serves as our dining room and event space. Two lounges and a loft that are great for reading and relaxing.


We have rooms with queen beds and single beds. Guests either have their own room or share a room with others. Every room has wonderful views, wood floors, a comfy bed with linens, and shelves for storing personal items. There are shared bathrooms.


Twice a day we serve simple, healthy, abundant vegan meals.


Please be fragrance-free before arriving at the center. Members of our community are very sensitive to fragrance, which is found in personal hygiene products (soaps, shampoo, body wash), clothes washed with some laundry detergents and dryer sheets, and perfume or cologne. Weekend & Week-Long Programs: Up until June 7, 2019 12 AM, you may request a refund minus a $150 non-refundable deposit for the weekend and a $250 non-refundable deposit for the week-long. This is necessary for us to plan and schedule accordingly the number of guests to anticipate.
