Event description

Description

High-conflict disputes are increasing in all aspects of society, especially in separation and divorce. They often involve one or more parents, family members, friends and/or professionals with high-conflict behavior, characterized by:

  • All-or-nothing thinking
  • Unmanaged emotions
  • Extreme behavior
  • Preoccupation with blaming others
  • Prolonged, unresolved conflict
  • Drawing in many other people
  • Draining energy, time and resources

Yet these separation and divorce disputes can generally be managed by understanding high-conflict behavior and using skills to manage the dispute that are often different from ordinary conflict resolution methods.

This one-day program will focus in the morning on understanding and managing high conflict disputes, including advanced professional skills. There will be two practice exercises for managing high-conflict people in person (using “EAR statements” that calm them with empathy, attention and respect) and in writing (responses that are BIFF: brief, informative, friendly and firm). In the afternoon, we will focus on methods for managing individuals in court cases, as well as counseling families in preparation for decision-making (the New Ways for Families method) and resolving cases in mediation and settlement.
