This bike planning workshop will introduce attendees to the basics of bike sharing and developing a Complete Streets policy.

About this Event

Kane Kendall Council of Mayors, McHenry County Council of Mayors, Chicago Metropolitan Agency of Planning are jointly hosting this bike planning workshop on Friday, January 25th at the Centre of Elgin. The workshop is comprised of two seminars: bike sharing and Complete Streets policies. The seminars will begin at 10:00 am and conclude around noon. All are welcome to attend the event. The event is free, but all attendees must register online. Attendees are eligible to receive 1.75 AICP CM Credits if they attend both seminars.

The workshop will begin with the Complete Streets Policy seminar, conducted by Cody Sheriff, of McHenry County Council of Mayors. Those who attend will leave with a strong foundational knowledge of Complete Streets Policies and practices with a rural-suburban emphasis - in 15 minutes or less! Find out what your neighbors in McHenry County are doing at the county and local level. Those who attend will also be provided a copy of McHenry County Active Communities Workgroup guide on Complete Streets while supplies last.

The bike sharing portion of the workshop will focus on the basics of bike sharing, with additional information on the costs, benefits, and impacts of implementing bike sharing in your community, presented by Ryan Peterson and Troy Simpson, of Kane Kendall Council of Mayors. The presentation will be followed by a panelist discussion. The three panelists for the event are:

  • Susan Bidstrup, Director of Parking Services, Northern Illinois University: Susan is the administrator of the dockless bike share program at Northern Illinois University. They have 150 dockless bikes that are used by college students and faculty on their campus. Susan will share her expertise on dockless bike systems, overseeing a large bike share system, and the challenges of a bike share system on a college campus.
  • Staci Wilken, Executive Director, Kankakee County Convention & Visitors Bureau: Staci is the director of the new Zagster bike share program throughout Kankakee County. They have ten bike share stations and 50 bikes in their network. Staci will share her expertise on finding local sponsors, building political will for bike share, and creating a bike share system in a rural-suburban environment.
  • Maggie Melin, Advocacy Manager, Active Transportation Alliance: Maggie has worked extensively with municipalities throughout the region to help develop bike networks, infrastructure, and policies through her work at the Active Transportation Alliance. She will share her expertise on comparable bike share systems in the region, best practices for creating bike share systems, and other bike-related topics.
