Come join us at Blatherskite Park for a hands-on bike mechanic course! This 5 - day course will teach you the essential skills to keep your wheels spinning smoothly. Our experienced instructor, Peter, will ensure that you ride away equipped with the mechanical know- how and skills to suit you and your goals. Course Outline

This is a 5 day (30 hour) comprehensive bike course, covering all aspects of bicycle systems to give you confidence in diagnosisng problems and conducting maintanence. This couse encompasses practicle, hands on learning as well as theory modules in a safe, fun and inclusive learning environment. The course is designed for people with experience and interest in bicycles and a basic understanding of mechanics whether that is bicycle or automotive. The aim of the course is to advance your existing knowledge and to ensure that you can continue to uplevel your experience for either professional or personal purposes.


Course outcomes - you will learn the following repair + fixing outcomes related to a bike fundamental systems and funtions:

  • Wheel function + repair techniques
  • Adjusting/ repairing brake systems
  • Adjusting / repairing gear systems
  • Tools - what and how to use
  • How to do an M check and diagnosing skills
    plus much more



Who is this course for:

  • People with an interest/ knowledge and currently active in cycling, bmx, bikes in general, mountain biking.
  • You work in the community services sector and would like to up-skill so you can enhance your program offerings.
  • You work with young people and bikes in remote communities of Central Australia
  • You are interested in knowing how to fix your bike when out on a ride around town or out on the trails.
  • You are wanting the skills to be able to confidently refurbish bikes or repair your own bike.
  • You have some knowledge / interest in bikes, mechanical systems and / or love to fix things.



Course Requirements:

  • Although the course will go over the basics and fundamentals of a bike and the systems it needs to funtion, this is a course that is designed for people with knowledge and understanding of a bike and/ or fixing / repair skills, experience or interest. This is to ensure that the outcomes can be learned and confidently executed at the end of the course as well as to ensure that it is a learning and growing space in regards to bike mechanic skills.
  • High school level or equivalent of english reading, writing and speaking skills.
  • You are encouraged to bring your own bike and if this is not an option for you, we have many bikes that are suitable to utilise for the duration of the course.


ABOUT PETER - BICYCLE MECHANIC INSTRUCTOR

Peter is a qualified motor mechanic, fabricator/welder, workplace trainer and bicycle mechanic who got into cycling to aid recovery from a motorcycle accident at 20 years of age. He left university to become a bicycle retailer, and mechanic with friends, then a frame designer and builder who only rides his own machines. Later, he was a planning coordinator (3 Councils), Bike Ed teacher, VET-accredited writer and presenter of bicycle mechanics courses. Peter has been writing and presenting courses accrediting bicycle mechanics since 1999 to the local bicycle trade and general public and for the ABK community for 7 years.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to bring my own bike?

You are encouraged to bring your own bike to learn on. Please be aware that the course is not designed as a space to repair or rebuild a broken bike. It is an opportunity to learn and practice the practical repair skills from an experienced bike mechanic instructor.

What happens if I do not have my own bike to learn on?

That is completely ok, because we can supply you with a bike/s to learn and practice on for the duration of the course.

Is this course teaching me advanced bike mechanical skills?

No, this course is designed to further your knowledge and practice of bicycle mechanics - generally on the type of bikes that are seen when working in youth and community development bike programs.

Will food be provided for?

Yes, lunch will be provided daily however it is encouraged to bring snacks/ fruit if you desire.

What is supplied in the course?

You will be supplied with a bike to practice and learn on, the tools required to complete course outcomes effectively and effeciently, print and digital resources to access at the completion of the course, pen + paper to take notes.

Is the course a blend of practical and theory?

Yes, the course will be theory and practical learning.
