Description

BigFoot Digital Footprint research is designed to help digital citizens become aware of their digital footprints. This is accomplished through public workshops and seminars on data ethics and data awareness topics. This workshop is designed to take place over 3 weeks, beginning 13th Oct and following on each consecutive Friday until 27th Oct.

The 3 weeks will cover the following topics:

Week 1. What is my digital footprint?

Week 2. How do I take control of my digital footprint?

Week 3. What rights do I have on my digital image? What can I do with this new knowledge?

Prior to each event:

Users will be asked to download an app: iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bigfoot-digital-footprint/id1170084708?mt=8

Google Playstore: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bigfoot.bigfoot&hl=en

Please read through for disclaimers and further details about the experiment, BigFoot Digital app. Participation with the app is not required to attend the event. The app will be demonstrated during the event. Thank you for your participation.

Week 3. Examination of public policy and ethics implications of technologies.

Today's session will focus on ways in which certain policies and methods can help us address the ethical impacts of technologies. We will explore what kind of ethical impacts can be expected, why we should be concerned about them and what kinds of policies and methods could help us to deal with them. One particular method that will be introduced is the "Ethics Canvas". This tool can be used by researchers, but also by users of a certain technology, to help them think of and discuss what kind of ethical impacts could happen and what stakeholders could be involved.

Wessel Reijers, PhD researcher for ethics through the ADAPT Centre, joins us for the final week. Thank you all for the amazing time. Let's have some fun!

Week 2. How do I take control of my digital footprint?

The audience will be presented with material questioning trust in the digital sphere. Why do you need to hear from a programme developer to feel comfortable with someone else using your data and information? Do we have an issue with privacy? How can we control our digital images?

Dr. Kevin Koidl, Lead Researcher with the BigFoot Digital Footprint project, explains the difference between Right-To-Be-Forgotten and requesting information about our digital identities. We also have a conversation about what exactly companies do with our digital footprint information.

Users will be asked to go through an experiment specifically examining their Facebook digital footprint sizes, this will be followed by a general discussion, workshop activity, and Q&A session.

Week 1. What is my digital footprint?

The audience will be presented with a general introduction to the research, followed by a detailed conversation on: Implicit vs. Explicit, what are these terms, and why do I need to know them? Age differences in privacy settings as used on social media. Are younger audiences more aware of their privacy needs? Digital content awareness, moving from Facebook to Web 2.0, the digital sphere. Who, why, and how is it used? Users will be asked to go through an experiment specifically examining their Facebook digital footprint sizes, this will be followed by a general discussion and Q&A session.

BigFoot ia an initiative of the ADAPT Centre for Digital Content Technology at Trinity College Dublin, and is supported by Science Foundation Ireland and the European Regional Development Fund.
