Event description
Big Sister, Sweet Clementines, Shamsi Ruhe perform at The Colony in Woodstock NY

About this Event

Big Sister is an all female rock band based out of Woodstock, N.Y. This guitar driven group has rocked audiences for 3 decades. There is no denying their musical influences that include Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Led Zeppelin and The Beatles to name a few.

After releasing 4 records independently, they released their major label debut on Capricorn Records "So Hi How Are You". This album was co-produced and engineered by John Siket (Dave Matthews, Phish) and received rave reviews nationally. Rolling Stone called it "thorny and luscious as a rose bush".

Big Sister has opened for a diverse list of impressive performers including Etta James, Solomon Burke, Bo Diddley, Joan Osborne, The Spin Doctors, Joey Ramone, The Band, The Fabulous Thunderbirds and Sue Foley.

You can always expect infectious grooves at a Big Sister show, they will keep you on your feet and out of your seat.

----------

The eccentric (sm)art-pop quintet The Sweet Clementines is led by songwriter/guitarist and music critic John Burdick. Somewhere between Brahms and a shambolic pop classicism, unafraid of either “J” word (jazz or jam), The Sweet Clementines augment traditional rock instrumentation with vibraphones, violins, sophisticated vocal counterpoint and electronic accents, all in support of a huge body of evocative and elegant songs. Four years after though it were the kiss of death raised the band’s profile in upstate New York, earning critical raves, extensive airplay on independent radio, and prestige bookings throughout the region, the New Paltz-based band released the more rocking and mean-spirited Lake Victoria in 2016, prompting Chronogram to remark, “that the Sweet Clementines are still not signed to a national record label is just criminal.”

----------

Shamsi Ruhe is a singer and songwriter with a female folk/alternative music vibe likened to Tracy Chapman and The Weepies. Ruhe was the lead singer in the band ONE based out of Phoenix, AZ. She was signed to Mercury Records when she was nineteen years old, and subsequently signed by Chris Blackwell to Island Records.

Shamsi Ruhe writes and sings much of her own material. She has worked with Grammy award winning producers Paul Kolderie (Pixies, Warren Zevon, The Go-Go’s, Hole, Radiohead), Dean Jones (Dog On Fleas and The Felice Brothers), and Paul Ebersold (3 Doors Down, Sister Hazel). She also wrote and recorded with a team composed of Grammy nominated producer Rick Chertoff and Eric Bazilian, and Rob Hyman of The Hooters at Rykodisc.

Even though Shamsi was virtually tone deaf in childhood, her mother had dreamed about her while pregnant, envisioning a girl with a huge voice singing in a concert hall. So Shamsi was placed in vocal training with an opera coach at age four.

She grew up in Nashville, singing and writing songs and taking more operatic voice lessons.

Shamsi currently resides and performs in Woodstock, NY.
