When Your Entire Life Prepares You For a Single Moment

A Conversation About the Purpose and Challenges of Law Enforcement with Former Dallas Police Chief David O. Brown

On July 7, 2016, during a peaceful street demonstration against fatal shootings by police, a sniper killed five Dallas police officers. Dallas Police Chief David Brown inspired our nation with his compassionate, community-focused response which quickly ended the gunman's siege, calmed the community, and lent context to the rest of the country.

On Monday, June 5, Chief Brown, now a contributor to ABC NEWS, will be in conversation with Byron Pitts to discuss his new book, CALLED TO RISE: A Life in Faithful Service to the Community that Made Me, sharing intimate details behind this tragic day and inspiring stories from his remarkable life in law enforcement and now criminal justice and mental health care reform.

Studying for his bachelor's degree at the University of Texas, Brown changed paths in response to the epidemics of drug addiction and gun violence in the Dallas neighborhood where he grew up. A "throw 'em in jail and let God sort 'em out" beat cop in his early days on the force, Brown evolved as a law enforcement innovator and thinker, rising from S.W.A.T. team leader to internal affairs investigator, to the chief of police in a city long marked violent.

In CALLED TO RISE, Brown offers insight into the tragic day of July 7, as well as highlights of his 33-year career, from quelling riots to reducing crime to 50-year lows and excessive-force complaints by 70%. He also shares the intimate details of his personal story, including his marriage to another police officer, to the tragic deaths of his son, his brother, and his partner on the force. And, Brown outlines his community and earned-trust based approach to policing in hopes of providing a blueprint to help other police departments around the country and the world.
