Join Big Dance in Canberra this 29 April (International Dance Day)!

Learn the Big Dance at one of our free Big Dance workshops in April, or learn it online from our free Big Dance tutorials with your family and friends. Once you've done that, join thousands of people around Australia as we perform the Big Dance together at the National Portrait Gallery!

There are performances in Sydney, Melbourne, Regional Victoria and Perth. Later in the year Darwin will be hosting Big Dance too!

Registration is ideal.

No prior dance experience is necessary to participate as this is an inclusive event.

All group registrations need to complete this spreadsheet.

Note: You will be able to complete this after you have attended a workshop, or decided which colour choreography you will be teaching your group.

Big Dance is the largest free celebration of dance in the world. Presented by Ausdance NSW, Big Dance is a free participatory dance festival, a celebration of dance for all ages and all levels of ability. Big Dance 2018 is choreographed by acclaimed choreographers, Frances Rings and Craig Bary.

Full schedule of the day will be released in April.

The event sign on will commence from 1:00pm at the event venue, National Portrait Gallery. Please ensure you arrive with enough time to sign your group on.

Visiting the gallery - How to get here

The National Portrait Gallery is situated on King Edward Terrace in front of the High Court and alongside the National Gallery of Australia.


ACTION bus routes run from the various city centres past the National Portrait Gallery on a regular basis. Routes 1, 2, 3, and 80 on weekdays, and routes 934 and 935 on weekends and public holidays. For the latest bus timetable information please visit the ACTION buses website or Google Transit.

Those driving to the gallery are welcome to use our underground carpark. (Please check that page for fees and other access conditions near the main entry)


Using the underground carpark

The underground public carpark can be accessed from Parkes Place. The car park is open 7 days per week and closes at 5.30pm. Parking spaces for people with mobility difficulties are provided in the carpark close to the public access lifts.

Please note that there are no parking spaces for mini-buses, campervans, or trailers in the visitor car park and the visitor car park has a low clearance of 2.2m.

There is a pick-up and set-down space in front of the gallery on King Edward Terrace near the main entry.

Paid parking applies Monday to Friday 8.30 am to 5pm daily, excluding weekends and public holidays. Visitors can pay for parking at the pay stations in the basement lift lobby or at the boom gate. Cash, Visa and Mastercard payments are accepted. Credit card payment can be made at the exit boom gate.

What shall I bring?

Wear either Red, Black, or White top (depending on which group's choreography you are doing). If it's a hot day, bring a change of clothes. Wear comfortable shoes as you will be dancing outdoors.

Remember to bring your water bottle and drink lots of water to stay hydrated. There will be a water-refill station.

Last but not the least, bring lots of energy and enthusiasm, and get ready to learn the Big Dance!

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

We aim to be environmentally sustainable for our events. You do not need to print your confirmation email. Just let us know your name upon arrival at the Registration Desk. We will send you more information closer to the date.

Do I have to attend all the workshops to participate in the event?

No, you don't have to attend all the workshops. You can attend one session and practice the routine at home using our Big Dance online tutorial on the website. If you can't attend any of the workhops, don't fret. Leane the Big Dance online!

We also encourage you to get your family and friends to join you, to practice the routine together and join the rest of Australia to do the Big Dance on 29 April
