How to Start Something That Matters + Contestant Mixer

This workshop introduces the most important skill any innovator or entrepreneur needs: the ability to build a network around your business idea. Following our mixer will be a presentation on crafting your elevator pitch and a chance to find team members or join a team.

Presenter: Andrew Hargadon

As the founder and faculty director of the Mike and Renee Child Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Energy Efficiency Center, Professor Hargadon has been at the forefront of designing programs that align industry and entrepreneurship with university research, in particular in the fields of sustainable technologies. Hargadon created and launched the UC Davis Entrepreneurship Academies, an experiential model designed to build the networks between university researchers and others and the investment and business communities. He has broad experience in teaching, research and practice in cross-disciplinary entrepreneurship and innovation.

About the Big Bang! Business Competition

The annual UC Davis Big Bang! Business Competition provides free workshops and other events from October through April and concludes with pitches from five finalist teams at an awards ceremony in May.

The competition is open to everyone and provides a forum for students, faculty, staff and the the public to collaborate, develop and test business ideas. You'll find resources for mentorship, team creation, education, networking and financing — and the winners receive cash prizes!
