The house on the hill by Cesare Pavese

La casa in collina di Cesare Pavese

The book represents the most mature phase of Cesare Pavese's literary activity. The story is set in the North of Italy, Turin and surrounding areas, during the final phase of the second world war. Through his identification with the protagonist, Corrado, the author analyzes the feelings and behaviors of the common people, spectators and at the same time victims, of the conflict even if not directly involved in racial persecutions. It is the story of the individual loneliness in contrast to civic commitment; the contradiction between life in the countryside and life in the city, in the chaos of the war; the overcoming of selfishness through the discovery that every man fallen resembles who remains.
