Description

Overview of the Old Testament

This talk on the Old Testament is meant to help people get a sense of how the Hebrew people developed from another Middle Eastern tribe to the monotheists that gave the Ten Commandments to Western civilization. We'll examine the history, culture, politics, geography and above all, the key figures and their devotion to God that comprise the key elements of the Old Testament or Hebrew Scriptures. Participants will learn more how the Hebrew Bible is divided into parts and what comprises those, a sense of how their history developed in terms of their relationship to God, how they fared during exile from their home country and the elements that preceded the Messiah, Christ Jesus. You will receive a handout of key points on the slides which are filled with paintings, maps and illustrations of the various Bible characters. We hope you can join us and bring your questions and especially your Bibles."

Meet the Speaker

Madelon Maupin

Although Madelon Maupin's academic background includes both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Biblical Studies, it is probably her 35 + years in business with a strong emphasis on written and verbal communication that promptsothers to often say, ‘she makes the Bible come alive’.

Spending 15 years in the newspaper industry, Madelon developed a commitment to highly focused, content-rich presentation, along with a strong research background. Then having a twenty-year Leadership Consulting firm in
Los Angeles working with some of the entertainment and high tech industry’s’ top firms, developed a capacity for clear, direct verbal communication. Combining these in talks and workbooks on Biblical topics through her
company, BibleRoads, has been Madelon’s joy since closing her consulting firm and focusing full time on BibleRoads.com. Madelon's goal is to help others unlock the Bible’s many spiritual treasures. Her approach includes unpacking the history, politics, geography, religion, customs and culture of Biblical periods and books with the goal of helping the reader or listener dive into them for their own inspirational answers with greater clarity.

Madelon graduated from San Francisco Theological Seminary with a Masters in Theological Studies, from Principia College with a BA in Biblical Studies, has lectured for Princess Cruises on trips to Biblical lands, occasionally leads trips to the Middle East, and has written over 70 articles for the Christian Science Sentinel
and Journal. She is a member of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston’s Ecumenical Team under the office of Committee on Publication and represents the Christian Science church at conferences and writing academic papers and book chapters for publication. She has served on the Board of Trustees for Adventure Unlimited as well as the New Theological Seminary of the West, and is a member of the Southern California Faith and Order Commission. Madelon lives in Newport Beach CA with her wonderful husband, George Birdsong, C.S., and their cocker spaniel, Parker.
