About this event
This event is brought to you by the department of Lifelong Learning at Virginia Theological Seminary
This class will meet on six consecutive Monday evenings (Sept 20 - Oct 25) with ticket options that allow for both online and in-person options from 7 - 8:30 p.m. eastern. Review our Campus Map to see if in-person participation is an option for you.
(Re)engage the Bible in strikingly new ways through a dialogue between scriptural texts and compelling artworks from across history and cultures. Rather than a course in art history, this offering engages scripture anew, using visual art that opens the biblical text and offers new perspectives on its theological and spiritual themes.
Our visual interpretations focus on the Fall 2021 Sunday lectionary texts, the specific scriptures assigned for the time around the course. Class members who attend church or who preach or teach in the church will deeply engage the very scriptures assigned for the faithful to hear and study in the period before Advent 2021. A tentative list of texts for the offering is as follows:
Week 1: Genesis 2 and Psalm 8
Week 2: Ruth 3–4 and 1 Samuel 1
Week 3: Psalm 16, Psalm34, and Psalm 91
Week 4: Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53
Week 5: Job 2, Job 38, and Job 42
Week 6: 1 Kings 17, Daniel 7, and Daniel 12
