Event description
Ever been to a "Dundunba"? Not the dance, THE PARTY! In celebration of Kwanzaa, Ballet Int'l Africans is hosting a Dundunba in Charlotte!

About this Event

A Dundunba is a Guinea party with live drums, music by popular African artists, performances by djeli's, and food, along with dancing freestyle when ever spirit moves you - that goes on all night long into the morning hours. Every culture has their own equivalent for example the Senegalese call there's a Tanebere, in East Africa a Bantaba, and so on.

Ballet International Africans and Sisters Of The Drum Call are excited to host the first Dundunba of many to come in Charlotte, NC. Though not as long as the traditional version, you will still get the energy of being up dancing all through the night. There will be food for sale, other vendors, networking, good music (LIVE and recorded African artists), a 30 minute beginner West African dance class for those who may be shy about jumping in the circle and dancing at the Dundunba. The live drumming will be for the first 45 minutes after the class and then music by artists such as Sekouba Bambino, Davido, Olamide, Youssou Ndour, Sona Jobarteh, Wunmi, and more will take over and close out the event while we support the vendors and have a wonderful time in the company of others who love this culture!

African attire is not required but preferred, no age limitations, open to all nationalities, genders, and levels of dancers. Drummers are welcome to sign up to play along with the members of BIA and SOTDC during the live drumming segment. Rhythms will be pre-selected based on what is traditionally played at this event BUT there will be an opportunity for attendees to choose a rhythm they love that hasn't been played.

It will be the third day of Kwanzaa and we will have a candle lighting ceremony and libation for the ancestors to open the Dundunba. "Ujima" means Collective Work and responsibility, so it is on this day that we mean to build and maintain our community together, to also make our brother's and sister's problems our problems and to solve them as one, together. This event promises to be unforgettable and something you will look forward to every year as it is sure to grow!

So get your ticket now (That pays for the 30 min class) and bring a donation for the musicians, as well as some money for the vendors - you will surely want to buy something from and support Charlotte entrepreneurs, I mean we will be celebrating UJIMA!

***If interested in drumming during the Dundunba just drop us an email so we know to expect you and what instrument you will be playing! Interested in performing (only African dance groups and singers)? Please email balletintlafricans@yahoo.com or inbox us on our fb page for application info. Vendors can apply here but space is limited so get your spot secured ASAP!
