Job Descriptions

We are recruiting highly self-motivated individuals who are enthusiastic to becoming part of this revolutionary process of making personalised healthcare beneficial to the general population worldwide (from disease prevention, diagnosis to treatment). BGI launched the International Community of Precision Medicine (ICPM) project in February 2016 with the aim to lead and overcome the challenges in realizing the practice of precision medicine. BGI has an extensive network with national and international universities, research institutes and hospitals; together we are going to build a comprehensive database of patients’ genetic and clinical datasets from all over the globe. We are also building the first precision medicine focused hospital as well as precision medicine focused clinical research centres with local hospitals across different regions in China.

All positions are paid at competitive rates compared to the industrial standards in China; there are also additional subsidies from local government that can be applied to.

Positions for Chinese returnees

  1. 1. Project manager (full-time)

Location: Shenzhen


Plan, oversee, and document all aspects of the project(s), which may vary from international research collaboration to business partnerships or even IT and marketing depending on applicant’s educational background and interests. You can also initiate new ideas for projects that may benefit ICPM’s long-term goal. In detail, you will need to:

a) Develop project scopes, objectives and detailed project plan, involving all relevant stakeholders and ensuring technical feasibility;

b) Communicate with upper management and all other stake holders to make sure that the scope and direction of each project is on schedule and on budget; communicate with different departments to ensure resource availability and allocation;

c) Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation; measure project performance using appropriate systems, tools and techniques


1) At least a Master’s degree in bio/medical related sciences or in business/economics/management with a strong interest to develop a career in the life-science industry;

2) Able to communicate in English fluently in both speaking and writing;

3) Leadership: Have the ability to motivate people from different departments to work towards a common goal in a project;

4) Time Management: Abe to work on multiple projects in parallel and deliver them on time.

  1. 2. Executive head of ICPM’s clinical genetics lab (full-time, overseas background preferred)

Location: Multiple locations are available including Zhengzhou, Beijing, Tianjin, Nanjing, Fuzhou and Shanghai. Location options are open to discuss


Responsible for collaboration in the field of Precision Medicine (PM) based on the joint PM platform built by the University hospital of Zhengzhou and the ICPM of BGI. You will need to :

a) Lead and oversee collaborative medical research projects (may involve clinical case studies)

b) Facilitate translation of new technologies from the platform and apply them in clinical practice

c) Participate in the construction of the database for the genetic testing centre

d) Manage the academic output of the platform (in the form of research publications, national and international academic knowledge exchange conferences) at different stages of the collaboration


1) Background (education or work experience) in the medicine or genomics/genetics/bio-medical field. A PhD degree or post-doc experience in relevant subjects is preferred;

2) Relevant working experience in national and/or international medical research institutions;

3) Fluent in both reading and written English at a professional level;

4) Good communication skills, spirit of teamwork and a strong sense of responsibilities

  1. 3. Senior project manager for the precision medicine hospital

Location: Qingdao (head-quarter for Northern China)


a) Involve in the planning of the construction for the precision medicine hospital; and in future responsible for daily operations of the platform supporting the hospital;

b) Responsible for communication and negotiation with overseas healthcare providers (both public and private hospitals); maintain and expand the network of international medical experts;

c) Promote international knowledge exchange and elevate the international impact of the hospital.


1) At least a master’s degree in medicinal science/medical genetics/biomedical sciences or other clinical related scientific background. M.D. or PhD degree in relevant subjects is preferred;

2) Work experience in international healthcare providers or clinical research institutes is preferred

3) Fluent in both reading and written English at a professional level;

4) Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team

  1. 4. Genetic analyst (full-time)

Location: Multiple locations are available and location options are open to discuss.


a) Participate in the collaborative projects in the precision medicine field and provide daily assistance and support for local collaborators at a professional level; facilitate the resolution of any professional issues related to genetics/genomics studies that come up at any stage of the projects;

b) Perform genetic analysis of the data obtained from genetic testing of clinical samples; be able to read genetic test reports and write up report according to standard operating procedures (SOP) of interpretation; be able to make accurate interpretations of the clinical sample reports for the tested objects.


1) Hold a Bachelor’s degree or above (Master’s degree preferred) in Genetics/Biology/Medicine or other biomedical degrees;

2) Fluent in English (at least CET level 6 or equivalent) with strong literature search, reading, word editing and writing ability; a strong self-learning ability is required;

3) A good understanding of the current situation and meaning of the genetic test field; and can master the use of common computing software for everyday business.

  1. 5. Bio-informatician (full-time)

Location: Multiple locations are available and location options are open to discuss.

Responsibility: Perform bioinformatics analysis primarily for genetics/genomics data obtained from clinical test performed at the PM centre.

Job requirements:

1) Work experience in performing analysis of genomic data;

2) Hold a master's degree or above in computing/bioinformatics/genetics or other bio-medical related major;

3) Possess good English literature search and reading ability;

4) Possess good communication skills and a strong sense of responsibility

Positions for non-Chinese candidates

  1. 1. Honorary director (part-time, international applicants preferred)

Location: Zhengzhou and other locations are open for discussion


Supervise the overall operation of the Precision Medicine (PM) centre jointly set up by University hospital of Zhengzhou and BGI with the focus to facilitate knowledge exchange between the centre and the global science community as well as improving the global influence of the PM centre.

a) Supervise collaborative medical research projects and put forward innovative research ideas that are best suitable for the hospital’s areas of focus and strength;

b) Conduct research and lead key discussions in interpreting difficult clinical studies from clinical genetics/genomics testing performed in the PM centre;

c) Provide clinical genetics / genomics training for clinical staffs while sharing experience obtained from working in international research organizations.


1) Extensive experience in clinical genetics with professorship in a world-leading university or hold a principal investigator position in a world-renown research institute;

2) Relevant working experience in international research institutions and / or medical institutions;

3) Good communication skills;

4) The position can be taken up full-time or part-time.

  1. 2. Project manager for the international graduate education program (Full-time)

Location: at least 2 months in Qingdao; rest of the time is flexible (with some traveling)


a) Responsible for coordinating with our overseas higher education institutions for setting up the joint Graduate School and other professional training programs;

b) Involved in negotiation with our overseas partners in regarding to the joint education program or professional training programs

c) Keep close communication with the project leader of the graduate education program in China and generate new leads for partnership with international reputed higher educational institutions (preferably in the field of medical/biomedical related field);

d) Research in international education exchange programs


1) At least a Master’s Degree in Education/International relations or MBA is preferred but people who hold other degrees who are interested are still welcome to apply;

2) Excellent communication skills

3) This position can be taken up full-time or part-time; if part-time you will need to visit Qingdao at least 4 times a year with a total time of no less than 2 months.

  1. 3. Post-doc fellowship or principal investigators (full-time or part-time)

Location: BGI-Research in Shenzhen

Responsibilities: Carry out independent research activities in the area of clinical genetics medicine with the aim to develop next-generation biomarkers for different disease types including cancer/infectious diseases/cardiovascular diseases/rare diseases etc..


1) A PhD degree in genetics or related subjects from a world leading University;

2) All skills required to carry out an independent research project for post-docs; an additional request for people management skills if you are applying the principal investigator positions;

3) Willing to work in a Chinese speaking environment; for part-time positions, you will have to spend approximately 3-4 months in Shenzhen;
