Who should take this course?

The BGFD Honor Guard Basic camp is designed for Police, Fire and EMS departments looking to start an Honor Guard as part of their organization or for departments who may have formed an Honor Guard, but need to hone basic skills.

What will be taught in this course?

Accepted Answer

You will learn the skills necessary to provide HG services to your respective communities.  Skills such as flag presentation (posting or presenting flag details) for department or community events, parade details and honors funeral services are all key ingredients to a polished Honor Guard program.

Question 3

Is this a physically demanding camp?

Accepted Answer

YES it is.  Please consider this prior to registering.  Most of the camp is live demonstration and hands-on skills.  Expect to be on your feet most of each day (standing in formations, executing facing and marching movements).  Carrying flags and weapons and some heavier lifting will be required.

Is there a minimum age requirement?

Yes, typically age 16 (or attendee with valid driver's license) is required due to traveling to varying training locations.

Question 5

What should I bring to the camp?

Accepted Answer

Bring long pants (duty uniform pants), station shoes (comfortable for extended standing and walking), department flags, decommissioned weapons (ceremonial rifles, axes, pike poles, etc) and Class-A (Dress) uniform with any accessories and civilian clothes and toiletries for after-hours.

What is the dress code for the course?

We will provide (4) t-shirts, (1) sweatshirt, (1) ball cap and I.D. Lanyard for you to wear each day of the training. Our camp uniform will be t-shirt/sweatshirt (provided), station pants, station shoes, ball cap (provided) and I.D. lanyard (provided). The last day, you'll wear your Class A's.

What can/can't I bring to the class?

Snacks are welcome as long as they're not intrusive or distracting to other students and drinks are okay provided they are managed.  Our course involves hands-on skills both indoors and outdoors, so a drink that can be spilled would need to be relocated and/or sealed prior to performing such skills.

Any other classroom rules?

Accepted Answer

We ask that cell phones be kept on silent or off during the instruction portion of the class.  It is distracting to other participants and hinders learning of important information.  Breaks and lunch will be provided which will allow for catching up on calls, texts or other digital needs.

Will there be breaks during the day?

Accepted Answer

Yes, typically the instructor will have 5-10 minute breaks on the hour (or whenever a module will allow) and a 1-hour lunch will be given, as well.

What if something comes up and I can't make it?

In the event you cannot make the camp, you can transfer your individual (or group) registration to another person.  If that's not an option, you can cancel your registration for a full refund up to 14 days prior to start of the course.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

Prior to the event, you should make every effort to transfer the registration to another attendee to avoid any confusion.  If this is not possible, we may contact the registered participant (prior to event start) to ensure they are giving up their spot.

Question 12

Will I get training hours for this course?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Kentucky firefighters will receive (upon request) a KFS-1b Training Notice for 40 hours in Special Topics in Firefighting (Course Code: II0000) as well as a certificate of completion for any/other outside agencies to attach to their department training forms.
