Event description
Black Girls CODE and General Motors: Reimagining Black Futures Virtual Hackathon for girls ages 12-17!

About this Event

Description

Black Girls CODE is teaming with General Motors to deliver a girls-only virtual hackathon as we push young women to Reimagine Black Futures. Participants will form into groups around a project, application or document to collaboratively investigate a problem and create an innovative solution that incorporates the concepts found in Afrofuturism, as it relates to social justice.

What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is an event designed to bring groups of people together as they work collaboratively to solve a wide-array of problems through computer programming. Black Girls CODE youth hackathons are education focused and allow students to work in teams with experienced mentors over a three-day weekend building apps and tools. Students will learn how to design and build apps, concluding the weekend with team presentations! A winning team will be chosen from each city who will move on to compete for the national prize.

What is Afrofuturism?

A movement in literature, music, art, etc., featuring futuristic or science fiction themes which incorporate elements of Black history and culture. As seen in the movie Black Panther, the use of afrofuturism provided a futuristic and alternative uncolonized view of Africa while incorporating elements of African culture.

Who can participate in the hackathon?

The Reimagining Black Futures hackathon is open to girls of all experience levels. Previous computer camps and STEM exposure are great but young ladies new to coding and app development are welcomed and encouraged to register as well!

We invite students fitting into the following categories to register today:

  • Girls of all experience levels

  • Girls who are interested in computer science, STEM, mobile applications, and gaming
  • Girls with access to a computer, cell phone and internet/web
  • Girls MUST BE available all three days of the Hackathon
  • The winning team MUST BE available for the final pitch competition October 31.
