1st Annual Beyond the Barriers Career & Resource Expo:

Presented by Alameda County Probation Department


For WHOM: People currently on probation/Justice involved individuals 18 years of age and older.

WHERE: Oakland Marriott City Center, 1001 Broadway, Oakland CA

WHEN/SCHEDULE: Wednesday, October, 25, 2017, from 10:00am – 3:00pm

  • Employer & vendor registration and set up: 8:00-9:30am
  • Guests & People seeking employment may register: 9:30am- ongoing
  • Career Expo & workshops open: 10:00am-3:00pm
  • Select employers will interview the day of: invitation only**
  • Vendor/Employer Tear-Down: 3:00pm-4:00pm

HOW TO REGISTER AS A GUEST/PERSON SEEKING EMPLOYMENT:

This event was specifically created with YOU in mind. Please read the following:

REGISTRATION: begins as early as 9:30am at the Box office entrance. Doors to the event open at 10am. Walk-ins welcome!

  • For those who pre-register: Present your ticket (printed or on your smartphone) at the registration table.
  • Walk-Ins: We'd like to register/collect your basic contact information to invite you to future events AND follow-up after this career expo to gauge whether this event was a benefit to you and yours.

WHAT TO BRING/WEAR:

  • Dress to impress in business casual. Some employers may choose to interview you the day of this event.
  • Please come prepared with: business cards, portfolio, resumes, references, writing materials, note-taking materials, identification, and questions for employers

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE: Each workshop is 20-25 min. long and will raffle a bicycle courtesy of Tri-Cities. Workshops will be held in East Hall 2 (enter through the main career exhibit hall)

  • 12:40- 1:10pm: Restorative Media: Controlling our Narrative (SF BAY VIEW)
  • 1:15- 1:45pm: Pathways to Careers in Construction (AC TRANSIT/A2)
  • 1:50- 2:20pm: Job/Search/Career Exploration (ROOTS COMMUNITY HEALTH CLINIC)
  • 2:30- 3:00pm: Breaking Brriers through Educaiton (5 KEYS CHARTER SCHOOLS)
  • 3:05- 3:35pm: Express Employment Professionals (EXPRESS PROS)

This career & resource expo aims to reduce employment barriers for formerly incarcerated individuals by linking prospective candidates to fair chance employers and other organizations who implement fair hiring policies. Employers - business owners, hiring managers, human resource professionals, barrier removal agencies, and more:

  • Registration and table space is FREE
  • Enjoy a Boxed lunch for 1-2 representatives
  • Special consideration will be given to employers who are ACTIVELY HIRING
  • Direct access to qualified candidates from Alameda County

FAQs

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

This event is specifically geared towards the re-entry population (and even broader those who were formerly incarcerated/justice involved) who are Alameda County residents and age 18 and older.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Transporation and food is not provided, however here are some options:

1) BART: Oakland Marriott City Center is directly across from the 12th Street BART station

2) Downtown Parking Options:

  • Oakland Convention Center (1 block): 550 10th st.
  • Central Parking (1 block): 577 11th st.
  • Douglas Parking (2 blocks): 420 13h st.

3) Paratransit (for juvenile population, pecifically 18-19 years old for this event)

4) AC Transit: Line 1

5)Also consider the following (esp. for current probationers):

  • Talk to yourProbation Officer and/or case manager about transporation support
  • Community agencies supporting the Probation population who provide employment opportunities
