Beyond the Algorithm
Overview
Beyond the Algorithm: What Role Does Social Media Play in Science Communication Today?
Date: Wednesday, 26th November
Time: 12:30- 14:00 CET
Since 2020, the social media landscape has changed beyond recognition. Once spaces for open dialogue and creative exchange, many platforms have become polarised, commercialised, or simply overwhelming. Audiences are fragmenting, and a “brain drain” of communicators has left some networks quieter — and others louder, not always for the better.
Yet social media remains a central arena for science communication and public engagement. It continues to evolve, offering creative ways to connect with audiences, foster trust, and spark participation. But what should we actually be using social media for today? What kind of impact can — or should — it have? Is it about visibility, community, advocacy, inspiration, or something else entirely?
Join us at our next EUSEA Hot Pot as we explore how social media can (still) be a meaningful tool for engagement, and how we as a community can shape its role in science communication moving forward.
