Event description
Meet the artists at the Opening Night Reception for ""Beyond Space" and the Grand Opening of the NEW Carr Center Gallery!

About this Event

In 2018, the Carr Center Independent Fellows were invited by artist/curator Carrie Mae Weems to create an exhibition called, Beyond Space.

The resulting exhibit questions the limits of the physical world to explain perception. Articulating, rather than defining, the more elusive aspects of place and black identity. It assembles work that offers communion between realms, people, and time.

Beyond Space includes work from Carrie Mae Weems and the Carr Center Independent Scholars, as well as pieces from Carole Harris, Miatta Kawinzi, and David Philpot — multi-disciplinary artists interested in forms of craft, ritual, and memory as sites for creative expression.

The artists exhibiting in Beyond Space confront the duration of legacy evident in the passing of time as well as stories of migration, spirituality, and domesticity, transcending fixed narratives of history by focusing on how, and whom, we commemorate.

Beyond Space assembles work that also acknowledges the potential of “black space” specifically to liberate and simultaneously confine its inhabitants.

The Beyond Space exhibit will in the Carr Center Contemporary Gallery at The Park Shelton from October 19th to January 5th.

Buy your tickets to the Opening Night Artist Reception Saturday, October 19th at 7pm. Meet the artists, enjoy food, beverages and LIVE music for only $10
