Event description

Description

This timely workshop brings people together to learn about the obvious and subtle behaviors, comments and actions that define sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior, as well as engage in meaningful dialogue across gender. It features an exciting open dialogue process, “Equity Across the Gender Divide,” a facilitated process that includes large group conversation, dyads, small groups and fishbowls.

“Beyond Sexual Harassment: Equity Across the Gender Divide” is presented by Simma Lieberman Associates and hosted by the NorCal Resilience Network, part of a series to support capacity building for organizations and leaders building resilient communities. It designed especially for activists and organizers in the environmental and social justice movements, but everyone is welcome regardless of your profession. Dinner ($5 donation requested) and networking will be from 5:30-6:15.

Background:

No industry, including environmental and social organizations, seems to be immune from incidents of sexual harassment. Responsible organizations are seeking solutions, but they're not sure what to do besides scheduling the old standby-sexual harassment training.

We need solutions that don't put all the responsibility primarily on women to take action.

We need solutions that include everyone in the organization working together to stop inappropriate behavior, sexual misconduct and inequality based on gender.

With the right information, open dialogue and sensitization to boundaries, sexual harassment, and unintentional inappropriate behavior can be prevented. We will also increase trust, build more collaboration and bring about change in the way we communicate, think and work across gender.

Workshop Objectives:

• Define overt and subtle behaviors, biases and comments based on gender, gender inequality and perceived power inequality and privilege

• Build more empathy and work together to stop objectification based on gender

• Share ways to address issues of harassment and gender inequity as a group so the responsibility is not place solely on targets of harassment

• Leave with actions, solutions and accountability plans to take back to organizations in order to sustain solutions and continue the work to end harassment and build gender equity.

Meet community members; we will have a time for networking before the workshop begins.

Please note that we have a limited amount of tickets available for $10-20 for those on a limited income.

About the Presenters:

Simma Lieberman is internationally known as “The Inclusionist,” because she creates inclusive workplaces where employees love to do their best work, and customers love to do business. Today, Simma works with leaders of organizations who understand that while training in areas of diversity and inclusion is important, sustainable change only occurs when diversity and inclusion are integrated into the business strategy, and are part of the organization’s cultural DNA. She strongly believes that implementing good diversity management and developing cultural intelligence are necessary for organizations to stay relevant and competitive in tomorrow’s markets.

Joel Brown works with a variety of organizations and institutions of higher learning to build consciousness, capacity, community, and collective esteem. Its unyielding mission is to “create organizational space which is dynamic, inclusive, and strategic.”
