Event description

Description

Beyond Our Gates' Annual Dialogue brings in a national speaker to focus on innovative early-literacy programs and strategies being used elsewhere.

This year's speaker is Kevin Slattery from the group Providence Talks, which has received international acclaim for its work in bridging the "30-Million Word Gap." Researchers have estimated that children from impoverished families hear more than 30 million fewer words by age 4 than children from more affluent homes. Kevin Slattery will speak about the innovative techniques used by Providence Talks to tailor literacy strategies to individual children with remarkable success. He also will address how some of those strategies can be adopted by other communities.

Dr. Maggie Park, Medical Director of California Children's Services for the San Joaquin County Public Health Services, will give the "local response" address.

Buffet breakfast will be served starting at 8 a.m. and the dialogue program will start at 9. There is no admission charge, but attendees are asked to register under Eventbrite.

For more information on the event, contact Pacific Community Relations Director Mike Klocke at (209) 946-2134 or mklocke@pacific.edu.
