Description

Yemaya Prod. LLC is pleased to announce our 4th annual production, Beyond Climate Change Theater Production, produced by University of California Irvine PhD students in the Department of Urban Planning and Public Policy, Zayda Sorrell-Medina and Michelle E. Zuñiga. The play will take place on Friday, September 7th at 6:00 p.m. at the Glitter Box Theater located at 460 Melwood Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213. We invite you to be a spectator and/or a participating organization in this elevating journey.

Beyond Climate Change Theater Production is the culminating project for Yemaya Productions Engaging Our Community Program, a program that engages artists, scholars, and community constituents to examine social justice topics and to work collaboratively to produce an artistic piece that sheds light on the identified topic. The program goals are to: (1) Raise awareness among program participants and the community at large on social justice topics; (2) Provide opportunities for activism and community engagement, (3) Disseminate research to the community at large through art and other creative approaches.

The theater production combines a lovely blend of research, music, dance, media, and other forms of art to convey a message about the disproportionate impact of environmental injustice on marginalized communities. Spectators will also have the opportunity to learn about the resources in their community and how to get involved with our community organization presentations. This is a theater of the oppressed program, a type of theater production that engages the spectators in an interactive forum about social injustices, and to reenact scenes to promote a positive outcome. The play is about a community that may soon undergo a freeway expansion, and the constituents have organized to voice their opinions. Will the city council vote for or against the expansion? Come out and see!

With the support of local Pittsburgh artists and community organizations, we are pleased to provide you this program. In honor of Yemaya, the Great Mother of all living things representing our stewardship with the Earth, we come together on again on this special day to pay homage and to celebrate community. Receive ongoing updates on Facebook here. If you are interested in being a participating organization respond to this email. The program also features live Latin and Caribbean music, food, and Afro-Cuban Yemaya dance.
