Beyond Academics: The Other Side of Executive Function
Event Information
Description
We often limit our discussions of Executive Function to how it effects students academically, but there is another side.
Challenges with anxiety, emotional regulation, flexibility and impulse control all feed into emotionally-based behaviors that can have far-reaching effects. Children with weak Executive Function may:
— Over-react emotionally
— Have trouble matching actions to intentions
— Lack flexibility
These common behaviors can increase anxiety and lead our children to act in ways (and for reasons) we may not completely understand.
In our October Lunch and Learn, Nicole McGarry, LPC will help parents learn how to make sense of the more challenging aspects of our children’s behavior as well as the hidden “need behind the behavior”.
Nicole will help us by:
— Defining the social/emotional challenges associated with weak executive function
— Helping us to understand the “why’s” of the behavior
— Providing better coping strategies to reduce the impact on the child, the family and all social relationships
If you have ever felt like you were alone in dealing with these issues, we encourage you to join us for this revealing conversation about the challenges on “other side”.
