Description
WHO?
This event will be important for Diaspora leaders engaged with transformation of
diasporas engaged in development of their home country.
WHY?
In July 2012, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the 27 members of a High-Level Panel to advise on the global development framework beyond 2015, the target date for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The Panel is co-chaired by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, and Prime Minister David Cameron of the United Kingdom, and it includes leaders from civil society, private sector and government.
The Panel is part of the Secretary-General’s post-2015 initiative mandated by the 2010 MDG Summit. UN Member States have called for open, inclusive consultations involving civil society, the private sector, academia and research institutions from all regions, in addition to the UN system, to advance the development framework beyond 2015.
The work of the Panel will reflect new development challenges while also drawing on experience gained in implementing the MDGs, both in terms of results achieved and areas for improvement. The Panel will submit a report containing recommendations to the Secretary-General in May 2013.
Diasporas in the US have not been engaged or consulted in this process, even though diaspora investments are large part of social safety nets, charity and increasingly development investments in their home country. This Session is one of many we hope to help organize in order to contribute the Diaspora voice.
WHAT?
This is a Participatory Dialogue (90 minutes) aimed at bridging the gap in stakeholder consultations by the UN High Level Committee on the Post MDG goals.
Event will start at 3:30 pm PROMPT. Please arrive to be registered at 3:15 pm.
HOW?
Participants will be guided through a facilitated process that will allow an exchange ideas on aspirations for Life and Global Development in 2030; craft elements of a shared vision; and posit a role for Diasporas in development processes and agendas and UN Consultative Process.
The outcome of this Dialogue will be prepared for submission to the UN NGO consultative process; and US Representation to the United Nations.
It is also hoped that this will result in Community of Practice that could contnue work on ensuring Diaspora NGO Engagement in this Process.
