Event description

A mini Between the Tides to celebrate the launch of Katherine May’s new book, Wintering

16.30: Group Swim* on the beach outside the Yacht Club, with Kent Sea Swimmers. The local Whitstable swimmers will be on hand for anyone who would like to talk about winter swimming. Open to all.

Please assemble on the beach outside Whitstable Yacht Club (see map) at 16.15. You’re welcome to use the changing facilities at the Yacht Club if you wish. The bar will be open in the Yacht Club afterwards.

18.00: Wintering by Katherine May – launch reception & reading. Finnish canapés will be served, and there will be music by Relig Oran. Space is limited, so this event is ticketed.

19.30: A Wassail for St Brigid’s Day: gathering on the beach, we will celebrate the Celtic festival of Imbolc, meaning ‘in the belly’ – a time when the ewes are pregnant, and the year is ready to burst forth into life. We’ll light a fire and toast the coming spring with a traditional wassail (more usually held on Twelfth Night). Open to all.

If you wish to join us directly on the beach, it’s the 3rd section east of the horse bridge/Oyster Stores (see map here). The bar at the Yacht Club will be open.

*Disclaimer: This is an informal meet up at a suggested time, not an organised swim. Swimming is at your own risk and the burden of safety is entirely your own. You judge when to get in and out the water, and how deep or far you will go out. There is no lifeguard (or first-aid kit) and if this is a concern for you then think carefully about whether you wish to enter the water. We strongly advise against swimming after the consumption of alcohol.
