About this Event

In the summer of 2014, Betty Collins was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). Also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, ALS is a rapidly progressive motor neuron disease. In the later stages, ALS affects the nerves that control breathing, making it eventually fatal. There is no cure or treatment for ALS and although every patient’s journey is different, average life expectancy after an ALS diagnosis is 2-5 years. The ALS Association research shows that there are 2 in 100,000 people diagnosed with ALS every year.

Up until the time of her diagnosis, Betty and her husband Bob had lived in their Evergreen Park home for nearly 50 years as proud members of Most Holy Redeemer Parish. Due to the limitations of her disease, Betty and Bob were forced to leave the only home their family had ever known and relocated to nearby Palos Heights, where they found living arrangements that accommodated Betty's needs. Betty has been confined to a large electric wheelchair for several years now, and as such, getting out has become increasingly difficult. A wheelchair accessible vehicle is now required to transport Betty to and from her doctor's appointments and social outings.

Today, Betty fights bravely as her disease progresses. But her medical needs and the associated costs continue to mount. While it is recommended that Betty receive 24/7 around-the-clock care, right now caregiver hours are limited due to the expense. Annual expenses for 14 hour a day care alone is over $100,000 and is not covered at all, even partially by Medicare or supplemental insurance. And these are only caregiver costs. Betty and Bob do not have long term disability insurance.

With all of this in mind, the Friends of 'Betty's Brigade' invite you to join us on Saturday, March 2nd, 2019 at 115 Bourbon Street in Merrionette Park, IL for the Betty's Brigade Benefit. Proceeds will go towards off-setting Betty's medical expenses. In addition, a donation will be made to The Les Turner ALS Foundation.

Thank you in advance for your consideration. We hope to see you on March 2nd.

Sincerely,

Friends of Betty's Brigade
