Better Together: Men and Women in Ministry Leadership

Featuring a Dialogue with Nancy Ortberg, CEO of Transforming the Bay with Christ, and President Jeff Iorg

Nancy Ortberg and Jeff Iorg will be leading a discussion on cultivating ministry environments that protect, support and enable both women and men in Gospel service together.

Nancy is a gifted communicator who is passionate about helping people connect what they believe with their everyday lives. She is currently the CEO of Transforming the Bay with Christ, a non-profit organization working to catalyze a holistic gospel movement in the San Francisco Bay Area. Nancy is the author of Looking for God: An Unexpected Journey Through Tattoos, Tofu, & Pronouns and Unleashing the Power of Rubber Bands, Lessons in Non-Linear Leadership.

Healthy relationships are important for ministry. This workshop will provide practical guidance for establishing healthy working relationships among colleagues within a ministry organization.


The Price and Promise of Men and Women Working Well Together - 2:30 p.m.

Alicia Farquhar and Courtney Coates

Courtney M. Coates, executive pastor and general counsel, advising pastors and faith-based organizations, and Alicia Farquhar, of counsel, practicing employment law on behalf of employers at a major Silicon Valley firm, will present on legal and biblical perspectives related to the #MeToo Movement. The presentation will include a discussion of new and existing California legislation impacting the church as an employer, the general scope and parameters of the ministerial exception and an examination of the intersection of law, scripture, theology, culture and ecumenical perspectives. The discussion will also focus on specific applications in the ministerial workplace and the interaction of women and men in that context.


Mutual Partnership in the Ministry: Working Together in the Local Church - 4 p.m.

Marie and Noel de Guzman

This workshop will focus on practical ways for men and women to work well together in the local church. Special emphasis will be placed on cultural differences and expectations related to roles, family dynamics and service in the local community.


Healing the Family Secrets in King David’s #MeToo Dynasty: 2 Samuel 11-19 as Case Study - 4 p.m.

Dr. Debbie Steele and Dr. Rick Durst

This session will explore the destructive domino effects of sexual assault within families. If not disrupted, these effects can wreck lives over generations. Attendees will assess possible ways to prevent the potent damage of sexual assault and learn how biblically informed and emotionally aware actions of reconciliation can interrupt the domino effect.
