Description

We invite you to join us and a select group of people for Better Endings: Sharing and Learning Event on Monday 11 December 9.00-1pm at Blackfriars Settlement. Lunch provided at 1pm - stay with us for lunch and informal conversation.

About Better Endings

Led by Innovation Unit and supported by Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity, Better Endings has been a design-led innovation programme running in Southwark and Lambeth through 2017.

Our aim has been to develop new practices and approaches that demonstrate how we can think and work differently so that people’s experiences might be radically enhanced at the end of life. Through the year, we’ve been generating new insights and perspectives on the challenge (using insights from ethnographic research with people who are living, dying, caring and dealing with loss) and creating a much-needed space for a diverse group of people – clinical and care professionals, individuals and families, voluntary and community organisations – to work creatively and collaboratively together to design something new.

We have taken 3 new concepts into development:

  1. Neighbourhood Care: Building neighbourhood volunteer networks around isolated people, so that no one who is dying is left without practical and emotional support.

  2. Coach4care: Peer-led coaching to help carers sustain their love, energy and well-being.

  3. Ripples: Using dialogue and storytelling to help people to explore the value of their lives and experiences for themselves and to others.

These prototypes propose and demonstrate ways to:

  1. Empower new agents of care and support, and grow a more diverse ecology of care and support (with a strong community participation agenda)

  2. Encourage and enable many more people to feel confident to offer the social, emotional and practical support that people need and often don’t get when they are dying, caring or dealing with loss

  3. Promote and enable greater self-care (for people who are dying and their loved ones)

  4. Complement and build from the work of clinical and care professionals, creating much-needed new capacity around health and social care services.

About the event:

Better Endings: Sharing and Learning Event will be an opportunity to:

  • Immerse yourself in the new ideas and concepts and see practical demonstrations of new approaches

  • Hear from people who have been involved the process of developing and testing concepts, and

  • Work with colleagues to explore ideas for further development and future applications of the new approaches, thinking also about how we want our culture and systems to shift to enable better experiences at the end of life.

We really hope you can join us.
