Event description

Description

On Thursday, May 31 the City of Philadelphia and Mayor Kenney will officially announce the development of the Bethel Burying Ground Historic Site Memorial, reflecting the site’s role in Philadelphia and U.S. history and honoring those laid to rest there.

This will be the first of several public events intended to educate the public about the Bethel Burying Ground and engage the surrounding communities in the purposeful portrayal of its history into a physical memorial. City Officials, committee members, and community members will use decorative luminaries to mark the Bethel Burying Ground’s footprint— making visible the resting place of thousands of Philadelphia’s early black residents.

The event will mark approximately five years since the Philadelphia Historical Commission voted unanimously to designate the site as “historic” and subsequently list it on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places, as well as approximately five years since an archeological investigation confirmed the site’s history.
