Best Practices for Running SQL Server in VMware

Event Details

Performance issues when virtualizing SQL Server are all too common.  SQL Servers can run faster and more reliably under VMware, but you can’t just use the defaults and expect databases to fly.  In this three-hour session (plus an extra hour for in-depth Q&A and demos at the end), production DBAs will learn why:

  • Virtual CPUs are different - and sometimes less is more
  • Virtual memory is different - and how to set SQL Server max memory under VMware
  • Virtual storage is different - and whether we should use VMDKs or raw LUNs
  • Virtual networking is different - and why we have to do our backups differently
  • Virtual monitoring is different - and why Task Manager is a dirty, filthy liar
  • Virtual high availability is different - and why clustering in VMware might not be a good idea

This session is for DBAs who are frustrated with slow or unpredictable SQL Server performance inside VMware, or DBAs who are about to embark on virtualizing their first SQL Server.

About the Presenter - Brent Ozar

Brent has over a decade of hands-on experience with SQL Server, and he specializes in performance tuning for SQL Server, VMware, and storage.  He co-authored Professional SQL Server 2008 Internals and Troubleshooting, including writing the storage chapter.  His sessions have won awards around the world including Best of the PASS Summit for two years running.

About the Event and Replays

The event will happen live - Brent will be on a webcam giving the entire presentation and demos live.  After the event, paid attendees for the downloadable version will get a downloadable recorded version to keep too.  (The recorded version may not be of your event - it might be a prior event if we have recording difficulties.)  If you buy the recorded version, you get it even if you don't attend the live event - so it's a nice insurance policy in case your schedule changes or a production server needs your attention.  We do recommend you attend live so you can ask questions.  Brent loves questions.  Now if only he could find someone to give him answers...
