Event Details

The new Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center, completed in November 2016, adopted sustainable principles early on its conception and design. One of only a handful of hospitals around the world certified Platinum, as of 2017 using the LEED 2009 BD+C ID+C Health Care tool, the 550,000-square-foot, 321-bed acute care hospital reflects a holistic, integrated model of design and construction with several innovative strategies that provide prototypes that could be easily adopted by other health care facilities. In this interactive session, the architect, engineer, contractor, and owner will share how the team collaborated, tracing the evolution of design concepts to completed building, starting with a genealogy of the hospital’s high-performance façade and ending with a virtual reality tour of the hospital campus’s Energy Center. Advanced level.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
• Identify the analysis approaches for targeting a 50% reduction for LEED 2009 BD+C and ID+C Optimize Energy Performance Credit and how that relates to actual performance for a large, acute-care medical center.
• Describe the approach to LEED 2009 BD+C ID+C Integrated Project Planning and Design for hospital owners to leverage team expertise to align with sustainability goals for new hospitals and clinical care models.
• Demonstrate how achieving a LEED Innovation credit for Circadian Rhythms for 100% LED lighting fosters better occupant health and improved patient healing outcomes.
• Assess how passive design strategies and achieving LEED 2009 BD+C and ID+C's IEQ-2 credit intention for improved indoor air quality ripples through a hospital's systems design selection from the building to central plant.
