SitStayRead is the leading literacy organization in the United States to use dogs as a tool to improve reading skills and foster the love of learning in at-risk children, grades one through four in impoverished Chicago neighborhoods. Founded in 2003, the organization brings teams of trained volunteers and certified reading assistance dogs to inner-city Chicago schools and community centers.
Dogs enable SitStayRead to tackle the serious issue of childhood illiteracy in a fun way, and test scores prove that our programs improve reading fluency. Since its inception, SitStayRead has served 6,202 at-risk students in Chicago. Literacy programs are provided at no cost to qualifying partner schools and community centers who report 90% of its student population is living in poverty and 60% of third grade students are reading below grade level. This year SitStayRead anticipates serving 1,950 low-income first through fourth grade students in 78 classrooms across 13 partner schools throughout Chicago.
