Ensemble Apex makes its debut performance with an exciting program of solo and chamber repertoire before a rendition of Leonard Bernstein’s Prelude Fugue and Riffs. Throughout the night core members of Ensemble Apex will demonstrate their skill on their instruments in a variety of both chamber and solo settings. Bernstein’s Prelude Fugue and Riffs was written upon request by Woody Herman. Unfortunately, by the time of the works completion Woody Herman’s group had disbanded. The composition was then re orchestrated and incorporated into Bernstein’s musical Wonderful Town although was cut from the final show. Benny Goodman caught wind of Bernstein’s work and declared his interest. The composition was premiered by Benny Goodman and his band conducted by Bernstein on the TV program The World of Jazz in 1955.
Tonights performance will feature the exquisite Oliver Shermacher on Clarinet.
