Description

Bernards Township Mayor John Carpenter stated at the January 9th Township Committee “The committee plans to discuss a resolution to terminate redevelopment efforts at Millington Quarry". He indicated this would occur at the Wednesday January 24th Township Committee meeting.

The Friends of Stop the Quarry Plan’s fight is far from over, and this is a very important meeting for residents to attend.

There are two issues:

1. The current plan is not right for our town and no planning should be done until contamination is remediated

The NJ Chapter of the Sierra Club stands with the Friends of Stop the Quarry Plan, LLC, and may join us at this meeting to show their support. The Sierra Club passed a resolution and released a statement opposing the redevelopment plan stating: “We oppose this project because we are concerned about the contamination and that the project is too large for the site”.

2. The Township Committee (TC) has declared the quarry blighted and in need of redevelopment and therefore can bypass review by the Planning Board, expert testimony and rebuttal. We need to make sure that the TC votes to rescind the redevelopment designation for the quarry and ensure the property will revert to the 2-acre zoning specified in the Master Plan once remediation and rehabilitation of the site is complete.

The meeting agenda will be released on January 19th and Township citizens will then know what the resolution will contain and the intentions of the Township Committee. It is crucial that the resolution includes NOT ONLY termination of the current proposed plan BUT ALSO a rescission of the prior resolution that deemed the quarry an “area in need of redevelopment.” Otherwise, the Township Committee is free – without further input from the citizens of Bernards Township or the Planning Board – to determine how ultimately the quarry property is developed.
