Event description

Description

This will be an educational photographic walk through historic downtown Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. We'll meet at Walmart Parking lot on Rt. 50 1/4 mile west of its intersection with Rt. 37. We will meet across from the Bojangles Restaurant (130 Crock Wells Mill Dr., Winchester), and car pool to Berkeley Springs. Our photowalk will begin at Berkeley Springs State Park, located in the center of town. Once you have parked, we will gather at the gazebo in the City Park. Long before the first Europeans discovered the warm waters of Berkeley Springs, it was already a famous health mecca which attracted Indians from the St. Lawrence Seaway in Canada and the Great Lakes to the Carolinas. The exterior pools are still accessible, including George Washington's "Bathtub." There is also the Museum of the Berkeley Springs is located on the second floor of the bathhouse. Established in 1984, it exhibits various historical items of natural and cultural significance to the springs and town. Admission is free.

We'll break for lunch (on your own); We suggest Angus & Ale, the Mountainside Restaurant, or Tari's.

The town square and other attractions in the historic community will be on our itinerary. This will include the train depot, the Star Theater, as well as various stores and other locations. We may even get a peek at the unique Berkeley Springs Castle!

We'll conclude our photowalk with a trip up to the Panorama Overlook. The Panorama Overlook, approximately 3 miles west of Berkeley Springs, offers a pull-off and a scenic view rated by National Geographic as one of the five best in the East. Included in the view are three states: Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia; and two rivers, the Potomac and Cacapon. The overlook marks the end of Cacapon Mountain which runs south from that point more than thirty miles to the Virginia border.

As we visit all these interesting and photogenic locations, Ron Gaskins and Amanda Haddox of Mountaineer Photo Excursions will suggest different compositions and offer advice on lenses and exposure, as well as answering your photography questions. We plan to conclude by approximately 2:00 pm, and then will leave Berkeley Springs to return to Winchester, VA.
