Scratching the Surface:
Discover how the art of DJing in Hip Hop culture and STEM intertwine in collaboration with MacArthur Fellow physicist, Dr. Carl Haber, Bay Area artist Jahi, and Berkeley Lab's own DJ Miles Green. Learn about the physics behind vinyl records and turntables, and the significance of them in the history and culture of Hip Hop. See live demonstrations on the turntables, an exploration on sound and sound restoration, along with various STEM connections to the turntable.
Speakers:
Dr. Carl Haber is an experimental physicist developing new technologies for preservation of inaccessible and deteriorating sound recordings. Haber was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 2013, and was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2001. He has been affiliated with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory since 1986, where he is currently a senior scientist in the Physics Division. Haber and his colleagues developed IRENE, a non-contact method for extracting high-quality sound from degrading or even broken analog recordings. The method has been used to successfully play several recordings for the first time, including the oldest known sound recording of a human voice and the only known recording of Alexander Graham Bell’s voice.
Miles Green joined Berkeley Lab as the Audio Visual Technical Specialist in 2019. During the day he provides pro audio, sound, lighting and video conferencing expertise to the Lab community. At night, you can catch him spinning The Groove Lounge monthly on Zoom! A seasoned DJ who can read the crowd, Miles Green mixes an eclectic blend of Hip Hop, R&B, House, Reggae/Dancehall, Funk, Soul, Latin and World music. The craft has been a lifelong passion for Miles who can DJ, Produce, MC and play the clarinet and drums.
