Fred Bergsten and Roberts Hormats are two of the most influential and knowledgeable individuals in the US today with respect to the world economic situation.

Fred Bergsten founded and has been the Director of the Peterson Institute for International Economics since 1981.  The Institute is the only major research institution in the United States devoted to international economic issues and has been rated the top think tank in the world (along with the Brookings Institution). He is a member of the President’s Advisory Committee on Trade Policy and Negotiations, a member of the Advisory Committee to the Export-Import Bank and Co-Chairman of the Private Sector Advisory Group to the United States-India Trade Policy Forum. Dr. Bergsten, himself, was the most widely quoted think-tank economist in the world during 1997-2005 (the latest period with available data).

Prior to 1981, he served as Assistant Secretary for International Affairs of the US Treasury, functioned as Under Secretary for Monetary Affairs, and coordinated US foreign economic policy at the National Security Council for Henry Kissinger. Dr. Bergsten has authored, co-authored or edited forty books on international economic issues. His most recent book is The Long-Term International Economic Position of the United States (2009, selected a “must read” by The Washington Post).

Robert Hormats is Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment. Prior to his appointment at State, he was vice chairman of Goldman Sachs (International) which he joined in 1982. During the period 1969-1982, he served as Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs, Ambassador and Deputy U.S. Trade Representative, Senior Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs, and as a senior staff member on the National Security Council where he was senior economic advisor to Henry Kissinger, Brent Scowcroft and Zbigniew Brzezinski.

Secretary Hormats has written several books and he is a frequent contributor to leading journals and newspapers. His most recent book is The Price of Liberty: Paying for America’s Wars from the Revolution to the War on Terror.

Both Dr. Bergsten and Dr. Hormats earned masters and doctoral degrees at The Fletcher School. Further biographical information on each may be found at:
