Spirituality and Psychoanalysis will be discussed by three distinguished panelists followed by a lively discussion with participants

Joseph A. Braun, Ph.D., has worked as a clinical psychologist for over fifty years in settings including state hospitals, Veterans Administration hospitals, a maximum-security prison-hospital, and an urban community mental-health center. He has been in private practice exclusively since 1975. Completing psychoanalytic training in 1977, he has been on the faculty of psychoanalytic institutes, including IPPNJ and its successor, CPPNJ, with a teaching focus on the clinical use of dreams. Among his clinical interests is the interface between psychoanalysis and spirituality/religion. Throughout his career he has worked therapeutically with many clergy of different faith traditions, experiences which have solidified his profound respect for dedicated clergy, their vocation, and their varied faith experiences and personal spiritualties.

Moshe Kahn received rabbinic ordination in 1975 from the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary of Yeshiva University. Upon becoming a rabbi he dedicated himself to the teaching of Talmud, a scholarly analytic endeavor that was also a profoundly spiritual and religious experience. He believed that intense Talmud study was a transformative experience that connected him to the long chain of Judaic tradition and the great Talmudic luminaries of the past. He also realized that in the Orthodox Jewish world the study of Talmud on an advanced level was relegated primarily to men and closed to women. This he felt was a terrible loss and shame. He therefore decided to teach Talmud to women and for more than 3 decades has been doing so at Stern College for Women, the Graduate Program in Advanced Talmudic Studies, of Yeshiva University, and the Drisha Institute for Jewish Education. His lifelong interest in Talmudic analysis and counseling students led him to pursue a career in psychoanalysis. In 2002 he joined the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis in New York City. Upon completion of its New York State license-qualifying program he received a New York State license and New Jersey certification to practice as a psychoanalyst. Currently, he is teaching at Yeshiva University and is in private practice in Teaneck, New Jersey.

The Reverend Fran Thiessen, an ordained Presbyterian Minister, is a graduate of Union Theological Seminary, NYC, where she earned a Master of Divinity Degree. As a student, her areas of study included biblical studies, theology, Theology and Psychology, counseling, and other religions (Judaism and Hinduism). She pursued training in Spiritual Direction at the Mercy Center in Burlingame, California and continued her studies in Spiritual Direction and in Ignatian Spirituality on the East Coast. She served as pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Norwood for about 10 years.  Currently she teaches theology at Caldwell University and is the Spiritual Director at Union Theological Seminary.  In August she will lead a workshop at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in NYC on Wise Aging. She has two daughters of whom she is extremely proud, and is grateful to be a part of this CPPNJ panel discussion.
