Benny Cruz's "Interdisciplinary Meetings", Immersive Artist Reception

Benny Cruz is an interdisciplinary artist known as "Your Local Benny". He will present his work "Interdisciplinary Meetings", displaying his text-based art through three camera lenses, at Box Factory Gallery from May 3rd through June 4th.

The opening reception is an immersive NYC experience featuring dancers from Smashworks Dance and a vinyl DJ set by Illegal Funk.

Benny Cruz (@bennycruz), aka Your Local Benny, is an artist whose work you've probably seen across the city. Most of his artwork is about New York including his works made on NYC subway maps. Benny says he's a local anywhere because of his energy. He works closely with photographer Jens Franzén who documents his art, which is mostly text-based art in public spaces. He also has collaborated with photographer Jana Gagliardi (@janaworx) from BK, who has photographed Benny's art in the NY subway.

Benny explains,

"I work emotionally, so aesthetics mean less than the message itself and I rather do something sentimental than something aesthetically appealing. At the end of the day, I prefer rawness because vulnerability is tough stuff." Lately, Benny has been designing his own fonts, cutting them out with scissors by hand, and applying them with folded duct tape for installations in public spaces. He says although it's a lot of work, it's tremendously rewarding to do something this original and spacious."

'Interdisciplinary Meetings', displays his text-based art through three camera lenses, opening on May 3rd through June 4th at The Box Factory Gallery in Ridgewood, Queens, NY
